I’m compiling a list of some of my favorite new bands of 2012, and another band that I would add to the list is John French and The Bastilles.
And so when you think of bands from Athens, GA, what bands come to mind?
Immediately, I think of bands like:
- The B-52′s
- Of Montreal
- The Whigs
- Drive-By Truckers
And the list could go on and on. But what has always been exciting about the music scene in Athens is the quality of work that is being produced by new artists in the area.
One of those upcoming bands that I’m excited about is John French and The Bastilles.
What is exciting about French’s upcoming album is that the entire project was fully supported by hundreds of people through Kickstarter. And because of all the support, French and his band were able to produce a full-length album on a professional level with professional equipment.
The album starts off immediately catching your attention with it’s “Americana” sound and creative lyrics. Every song on the album is extremely catchy and it will have you tapping your foot to the pleasurable sound, but it is almost more surprising at how sophisticated and deep the lyrics are to each song. Perhaps more than the catchy harmonies or their southern-folk rendition of Americana style, it’s the sincerity and rawness of each song that I believe is their chief appeal.
As the album progresses you become more enthralled with the sound, and even more connected to the raw emotions that leaks out in every lyric. It is for this reason that by the end of the album you are left satisfied but wanting more of this goodness, which will result in people wanting to play the album on repeat and anxious to see the band live.
John French and The Bastilles have created an all-around solid record that I believe will be greatly enjoyed and embraced by many people. And to give you a taste of what to expect from the upcoming album, you can stream one of the songs from the album below:
